The Nigerian mobile telecom sector has been referred to as the fastest growing market in Africa. Nigerian telecom came into the mainstream in 2001 when the deregulation of this potent subsector of the economy opened the doors to private involvement. The telecommunication system was opened up with the issuance of the GSM unified license in 2001.
The telecom sector in the country is presently undergoing speedy transformation on account of explosive growth and rapid infrastructure development. The well orchestrated liberalisation along with increased competition among the players has attracted substantial foreign investment over the past decade, which in turn had resulted into opportunities for the service providers and infra builders across passive as well as active areas of operations.
Market with huge potential
The mobile market of the country has tremendous growth potential given the fact that the penetration rate was just around 50 percent at the end of 2010. With rapidly improving mobile infrastructure and intense competition, the number of mobile subscribers is estimated to grow at a CAGR of over 14 percent between 2010 and 2013, with the penetration rate exceeding 75 percent by the end of 2013. The operators are aggressively pushing the deployment of network infrastructure, which is driving the investments in the country's telecom sector. The sector is projected to grow at a CAGR of around 11 percent between 2009 and 2013.
Right place, right time
During the second half of 2001, Reime started making in-roads in to the Nigerian market and decided to incorporate business operation in the country. At that time, MTN Nigeria Communications Ltd was just about to launch its services, and Reime slowly started a process of prequalification towards the successful operator.
Reime West Africa, Nigeria was formally incorporated on the 13th January 2003. After a slow start during 2003 and 2004, Reime’s business with MTN picked up momentum during 2005 and the association with the leading operator continues to flourish year after year. Reime West Africa has also worked with erstwhile Zain, Huawei Technolgies, Ericsson, Etisalat Nigeria and so on.
Reime West Africa is presently enjoying a large customer base and is fully geared up to meet the sudden spurt in business activities on arrival of Airtel Africa with their aggressive expansion plans. With the active support of ACME Tele Power Ltd (ATPL), India, Reime West Africa is rapidly emerging as a reputed supplier of a wide range of opex Saving and energy management solutions and services. The staff strength has now crossed 100 personnel, nearly two-thirds of them being electrical, civil or mechanical engineers.
