Background

Since attaining political independence in 1961, Tanzania has held, without fail, presidential and parliamentary elections (general elections) after every five years. The elections held in 2005 resulted in the swearing in of the fourth President of Tanzania, H.E. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete for a five-year term of office and he has extended his presidency by another five years starting 31st October 2010.
