Background
Following nearly 16 years of military rule, a new constitution was adopted in Nigeria 1999, and a peaceful transition to civilian government was completed. The president faces the daunting task of rebuilding a petroleum-based economy, whose revenues have been squandered through corruption and mismanagement, and institutionalizing democracy. In addition, the Obasanjo administration must defuse longstanding ethnic and religious tensions, in its efforts to build a sound foundation for economic growth and political stability. Despite some irregularities the April 2003 elections marked the first civilian transfer of power in Nigeria's history.
It is beyond doubt, that Nigeria is one of the extremely few African countries with high potential of prosperous economic development, where proper telecommunication infrastructure will be one of the basic conditions for success. The oil-rich Nigerian economy is undergoing substantial reform under the new civilian administration, paving the way for supporting businesses and a general rise in the welfare of the Nigerian population, estimated at 140 million.
The successful negotiations with MTN Nigeria Communications Limited in July 2002 represents the starting point for incorporating Reime West Africa Ltd. Reime has decided to move slowly in Nigeria, as we acknowledge the importance of adapting to the local business terms and culture of the country – a time-consuming process. During 2005, Reime West Africa was able to strengthen its position with MTNN as their progressive roll out plans demanded increased pressure on the qualified contractors. Reime West Africa takes pride in participating in the successful operation and expansion of MTN Nigeria. As of December 2005, Reime West Africa have delivered over 200 BTS sites including five MSC 100m+ towers to MTNN.
2005 gave new opportunities for Reime West Africa in the GSM infrastructure development, as Reime West Africa was awarded a Civil Works Rollout Management contract by Huawei Technologies to deliver V-Mobile Microwave Backbone Turnkey Project. This contract is considered a major milestone in Reime West Africa as this opens a whole new opportunity for the company to tap into other operators in the growing GSM market in Nigeria.
Nigeria is considered the third fastest growing GSM network in the world behind China and Brazil as reported by GSMA. Reime West Africa is positioning itself to play a major role in this market especially with Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) planned License Unification of the GSM and PTOs in 2006.
Reime NIS considers Reime West Africa as one of the most important local establishments made so far as the Nigerian telecom market is dramatically expanding. Not only is each operator expanding, but also the number of licensed operators.
